Must Have Music

I would think that everyone has a certain type of music that they like to listen to. What people sometimes don't realize is that music has the ability to be part of our identity, and what we listen to can define the type of person that we are. Personally, I listen to hip-hop, all day everyday. For me music is able to let me escape from real-life, and also is a way for me to get out of a bad mood. When I hear a song that is so good, it just makes me go crazy where I'm like, "OH DANG!!!!" That in of itself is an example of how my mood just changes like that.

Music can identify people where if someone listens to Classical music, people might think that person is really educated or label them as a loser, which might not be the case for that person. Some people think people that listen to hip-hop are uneducated or might think they are thugs, which again is not always the case. People are always trying to find new ways to be able to label people, and find a way to judge a person before you meet that person. Music can give an insight into a person's personality where if you see a quite person, but you find out they listen to heavy metal who might assume that, that person has a wild side to them.

Through music people dance, and dance is an expression of a person's identity. A girl that can dance really well to hip-hop for me, is super sexy. Other people probably really like a person based on the music they like to listen to or dance to. My professor thinks that salsa dancing is super sexy if a girl can do it. Me not so much. The only salsa I like is the kind you eat, but that's beside the point. These are examples of how people put value to music in determining the identity of another person, or a way to have something that they really like about another person.

This song called, "Music," by Erick Sermon with Marvin Gaye, sums up exactly how I feel about music. Marvin Gaye's part where he says, "Music is the soul of a man, Music makes a happy day, Music makes the clouds flow by baby, Your music is the tears inside my eyes, Your music makes me want to sing, Girl music is a joy to bring, Music is my heart and soul more precious than gold, Happiness today is just a song away..." That part is exactly everything I personally feel about music. To say that music is not part of my identity would be a lie. All of my friends could tell you about all the lyrics from different songs I rap to all of them everyday. When I find lyrics that make me go crazy, from then on I will say them and the day just gets better.

I don't know what music you personally like, but I'm sure they is something about it that you can say defines you as a person and brings you happiness. All I can really say is, "Happiness today is just a song away."

The Things We Buy To Cover Up What's Inside

People buy things for various reasons. Some people buy things because they want them. Others buy things because they need them. A lot of people buy things to impress others and to put on a persona of having a lot of money or being something that they are not. The things we buy can be a part of the identity that we have. In our society today we have a tendency to judge people based on what a person has or where they come from. What some people do to counter this is that they know that they will be judge on where they come from, so they will buy things that will make it seem like they do not come from a bad place.

If I was to tell you that this person came from Compton, instantly you would think this person is probably a thug and is in a gang, and is an overall bad person. It is sad to that, but that is exactly how people are now. To look into how people buy things to look like they are a rich person or to look like they are cool, we can look at any "reality" TV show.

Lets look at the show "Tool Academy," to be honest the people on that show are not just tools, but they are all the entire tool shed. Almost everyone one of them every week say something about buying stuff to look like they are not who they really are, and to add to their persona that they portray to others. The one guy said that he came from a very poor family, so that to look like he didn't he bought tons of expensive clothing and things to hide the fact that he came from a poor family. He even admitted to not talking about his family at all.
Another person on the show said that he was nothing without his "bling," and that he buys it all to just keep up with his fake personality that he wants everyone to see. All of the people use their external items to cover up what is really going on inside of them. They need to find their identities, their true identities. We put too much pressure on people to look a certain way and to act a certain way, that it is difficult for people to find their true selves. We can not allow for the things we buy to determine who we are as a person.

A lot of the problems that people have with identity, all stems from society in how judging and mean we are to one another. To fix a lot of the problems we have, it would have to start with changing society as a whole, which is an impossible task. In order to better ourselves and to get to the point of finding ourselves, we must just focus on ourselves and just don' t care about what others think.

The message from this is to find the things that you want to buy and not what others would want to see or want you to buy. Buy the things that don't cover up what's inside.
